The University of Tennessee’s lacrosse club team swept to victories over
three teams last weekend, including the No. 14-ranked and defending
conference-champion Georgia Bulldogs, at the Intramural field.
The wins improved Tennessee’s record to 5-0 and boosted them into first
place in the Southern Collegiate Conference.
On Friday, the Vols steamrolled North Carolina-Charlotte in freezing
conditions, 21-2.
The 49ers brought just 10 players with them, and therefore had no available
substitutes.
Freshman Jason Lewis notched four goals for the Vols in the win.
On Saturday, the Vols upset Georgia, 11-9, after trailing for three
quarters. It was their first victory over the Bulldogs in three years.
Lewin and fellow freshman Nate Tutt contributed three goals apiece for
Tennessee.
“The Georgia game was a huge win,” said midfielder Thomas Brinly, who
scored twice against the Bulldogs. “It always helps your confidence when
you beat a higher-ranked team.”
The Vols completed their big weekend with a 21-6 spanking of 25th-ranked
Indiana. Lewin and Mark Mashie led the way with four goals each as 10
players scored for Tennessee.
“The Indiana game was a big chance for a letdown. We came out a little
lackadaisical,” said Brinly of the Vols, who fell behind early to the
Hoosiers.
An 8-0 run by Tennessee put all doubts to rest, though, as the Vols
eventually ran away with the contest.
Next up for Tennessee is a match with No. 5 Illinois Friday at 6:30 p.m. at
the Intramural field.
