This Friday the student-based, free clothing shop Smokey’s Closet held an open house for all students to browse its selection of free business formal and business casual clothing.
Smokey’s Closet opened in 2016 to help undergraduate and graduate students save money on the clothing they needed for interviews. Every item of clothing is donated by students or staff, and the only cost to receive your clothing is the minute it takes to fill out a form.
The closet is staffed by volunteers trained in taking measurements to help students find clothing that fits.
Camille Brown, the current director of Smokey’s Closet, wants nothing more than to save students money.
“When I first came to UTK as a student, I realized that I needed nice clothing for job fairs and interviews and internships — and that it could add up quickly,” Brown said. “It’s nice to see students walk in here with no expectations and walk out with a smile on their face and an armful of quality clothing.”
The open house provided a few refreshments at the door and asked that students explore the two “closets” of free clothing. The masculine clothing closet was filled to the brim with suit jackets and suit pants, with matching ties and belts to spare.
The feminine closet is located in a slightly smaller room, but it was similarly filled with blouses and skirts and the like. Both rooms had a dressing room area where students could try on items, and the rooms were overlooked by a volunteer that could offer advice or assistance if requested.
Students of all shapes and sizes were able to find something that fit them. While Smokey’s Closet cannot guarantee students will be able to find a perfect fit or that specific sizes will be in stock, the sheer volume and variety of styles and sizes will give students a good chance.
The front desk can also provide students with the numbers and locations of tailors who can make affordable alterations.
Sammy Devore, an undergraduate student, was grateful that an organization like this exists on campus.
“When I first came to campus, I didn’t have anything that I could wear to an interview. I knew there was J.C. Penney nearby, but I didn’t have the money for that,” Devore said. “Thanks to the folks here, I have everything I could ever need clothing-wise, and I appreciate it.”
Smokey’s Closet is located on the ground floor of Greve Hall and is open 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. every Friday. Students are encouraged to email [email protected]to set up a private appointment for privacy and consultation or for any form of donation.
Smokey’s Closet also provides volunteering opportunities for students.
