February is a busy month for theatre and music in Knoxville. From alternative bands to Harry Potter concerts, next month’s list of live performances is certainly diverse. Here are some of February’s most anticipated performances.
Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella”
This modern adaption of a classic story has been a hit since its Broadway debut in 2013. The musical features the poor Ella who is subjected to a difficult family life until she finds sanctuary in her fairy godmother and the search for a mysterious prince. The theatrical production incorporates elements of the age-old Cinderella fairytale with new characters and plot points.
Showtimes at the Tennessee Theatre are on Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 2 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and Feb. 3 at 1:30 p.m. Ticket prices range from $60 to $170.
“Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azbakan”
The third installment of the wildly popular Harry Potter film franchise will be shown at the Knoxville Symphony, accompanied by a live musical performance of pieces inspired by the books and films. Showtimes are Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 2 at 1:30 p.m. Tickets range from $40 to $80, so be sure to purchase yours while cheaper options are still available.
Alternative rock band Young the Giant is performing at the historical Tennessee Theatre next week as part of their tour for their new album “Mirror Master.” The popular group has been critically acclaimed by the “New York Times” and has sold out famous venues such as Radio City Music Hall and Red Rocks Ampitheatre. Young the Giant has also performed at numerous music festivals, including Tennessee’s own Bonnaroo.
The concert is on Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets range from $29 to $49; tickets featuring a private performance experience range from $139 to $179.
This production tells the story of the British Royal Family directly after King Charles is crowned king. The Shakespearian-esque drama explores themes involving monarchy, democracy and rivalry. Various showtimes are available from Feb. 6 to Feb. 24 and are conveniently located at the Clarence Brown Theatre here on campus. Ticket prices range from $12 to $45 depending on the showtime.
The pop-rock band WALK THE MOON, famous for their hit single, “Shut Up and Dance,” will be performing on Feb. 17 at 8:00 p.m. at the Mill & Mine. Since the release of their first single, “Anna Sun,” in 2012, WALK THE MOON has been heavily praised by industry critics and has received numerous awards for their music. Tickets are available for $35, and VIP tickets are available for $99.
Tyler Perry’s Madea’s “Farewell”
Tyler Perry is currently touring for the last time as his character Madea, a kind and comical grandmother whom Perry has portrayed on stage and on screen for 20 years. In this finale to Madea’s theatrical performances, Madea and her family experience a disastrous family reunion filled with drama.
The performance, and perhaps the last chance to see Madea live before her retirement, is on Feb. 20 at 7:00 p.m. at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum. Tickets range from $78 to $750.
