This year’s second Vol Night Long had a different flair to it than its predecessors- instead of its usual room full of random fun, there was an organized Trivia Night as the main event.
Of course, it wasn’t the only option for fun; it was backed up by photo booths and casino games. This Vol Night Long in particular had a large turnout, as many students were having trouble finding–and keeping–their seats.
The Trivia Night allowed for students to form teams and collaboratively answer the trivia questions on their phones, using a site run by “The Big Quiz Thing,” also known for being a premier trivia night company that runs in San Francisco, New York and beyond.
“I’ve been to a couple of these (Vol Night Long events), and this has been the best one by far,” John Poston, a sophomore majoring in forestry, said.
The Trivia questions also had a lot of special challenges, such as “4-part questions” where the players could try to guess what song was playing when the song was modified to be played backwards, at different speeds or pitches. Another one allowed the participants to guess what movie audio was being played over a scene from another movie.
“The four-part ones were definitely the most challenging and required the most collaboration,” Lucy Buck, freshman supply chain management major and a member of the winning team, said.
“I thought this was a really fun way to spend a Friday night with my friends and get to use my knowledge of random trivia,” Buck continued.
In addition to these trivia questions, there were also points you could earn for getting the answer wrong- as long as your wrong answer was funny. These were a major source of entertainment to the crowd of students as answers were read aloud.
For example, the winning team was given points for answering “Which group of islands would you eat for lunch?” with “The Virgin Islands” instead of the actual answer (The Sandwich Islands).
After the first and second rounds of questions were over, there was also a Lightning Round, where the participating teams only had 10 seconds between each question to give their answers to questions such as, “What is onychophagia, one of the most common ‘bad habits’ among people?” (For those wondering, the answer was nail biting).
The event also had a short buffet line with barbecue sandwiches, desserts and assorted trademark southern dishes. Along with that, there was the classic photo booth stocked with fun costumes and accessories for friends to wear, and extra tables were set up for those who would rather spend their Friday night playing poker than answering trivia.
Overall, February’s Vol Night Long event had a place for everyone to have a good time, even as the room became fuller and seats were harder to come by.
