Career Services is offering students who are already thinking ahead to future careers the chance to land a job or internship for this summer.
Whether looking for a paying position or simply some resume building experience, Wednesday’s Summer Job and Internship Fair will provide students with some interesting opportunities for summer employment.
The fair is open to students in all grades and in all majors. In order to participate in the fair, students are encouraged to don their business casual apparel and bring several copies of their resumes.
Major corporations, such as Belk, Cisco, Nissan North America, Frito-Lay and others, will be present offering positions to UT students.
“The SJIF is a great networking opportunity,” DeAnna Bonner, assistant director and special events coordinator of Career Services, said. “Where else can you talk with representatives from 50-plus companies in one location?”
With participants ranging from Amazon.com to Walgreens, the fair has tried to offer options for students of every career inclination.
This year’s fair, however, will prove different than fairs in the past.
“The economy has definitely impacted the Summer Job and Internship Fair, as employers are being more selective in their hiring, and students need to be better prepared and more proactive in their job search,” Mary Mahoney, assistant director of Career Services, said.
With the tougher economic climate, employers will be searching for candidates who have a great deal to contribute to their organizations over the summer.
“(Employers want to see) good communication skills — both verbal and written, good interpersonal skills, organizational skills, time management skills,” Mahoney said. “A number of employers are seeking specific majors for their hiring needs, but many employers want individuals with the “soft skills” listed above and then they can teach/train the students on the specific skills needed for the position.”
Mahoney offers some tips for students who are dedicated to finding a gainful summer experience at this fair. She suggests background preparation before arrival.
“Be prepared — know what employers are attending and what they do,” she said. “By having this information, you will know how to ‘market’ yourself to the different employers. Be ready with what we call your sound bite or 30 second commercial — introductory information about yourself that will get the employer’s attention and will help them see you in their positions.”
She offered some practical advice as well.
“Dress professionally, as first impressions are very important. Get business cards so you can follow up after the fair,” Mahoney said.
The Summer Job and internship Fair will be held on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the UC Ballroom.
