Megan Flynn made the difference for Tennessee against George Mason on Sunday.

The redshirt junior, who hails from Arlington, Virginia, which is located close to George Mason University, took hold of a pass from freshman McKinley Burkett during the 82nd minute mark. 

Flynn moved to the left side and fired a shot that made its way into the net, giving the Vols a 1-0 lead. The Patriots were unable to answer, and Tennessee left George Mason Stadium with a 2-0 early season record.

Sunday’s victory marks the first time that the Vols have won their first two matches of a season since 2012. The win was partly due to the performance of junior goalkeeper Shae Yanez, who posted her second shutout of the young season.

The consecutive shutouts could be a good omen for the future for Yanez, who split time with now-graduated Jaime Simmons at the goalkeeper spot in 2016 before taking on the role full-time for 2017. Yanez has five career complete game shutouts.

Tennessee outshot George Mason 20 to 13 for the match. Flynn had two shots on goal, as did juniors Danielle Marcano and Khadija Shaw. The match was the Vols’ first meeting with the Patriots since 2000.

The Vols will host East Tennessee State University on Thursday for their home opener, with the match slated to begin at 7 p.m. The Buccaneers are 1-0 on the season, having notched an 8-0 blowout victory over South Carolina State on Friday.

On Sunday, Tennessee will matchup against Charleston at home, with the match scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
