The genre of science-fiction horror films may be one that is somewhat tired
and often not taken seriously. However, the new film Pitch Black
still manages to entertain the audience with nonstop action from a strange
and distant world.
The story takes the audience through the trials and tribulations of finding
a far-off planet after the crew’s freighter has a rather violent crash
landing. Shortly after the crash, the team discovers exactly why the planet
they landed on is so seemingly lifeless.
The acting in the film is on par with other sci-fi cinema features; there
is nothing outstanding about it. Vin Diesel (Saving Private Ryan )
plays Riddick, the bad guy turned good. Although this seems a little less
glamorous than the big Spielbergian war epic, it is still not that shabby
for Diesel.
The special effects in the film are not extraordinary, but they are decent.
The design of the alien creatures is quite interesting. These fierce
creatures are some of the best horrific monsters since Alien.
Surprisingly, the cinematography in the film is pretty good. There are
some notable shots of the background with the sun rising and setting that
represent the excellent graphics and sets.
Overall, Pitch Black is not a must-see film, but it’s worth the
effort if you groove on sci-fi genre. The special effects and character
design are eye-pleasing, but not eye-grabbing.
