Students remaining in Knoxville for Thanksgiving will not have any trouble finding traditional holiday events to attend.
Wednesday
The Thanksgiving Eve Potluck and Old Harp Singing will begin at 6:30 p.m. A Knoxville tradition, the potluck is free and held at the Laurel Theater.
Tina Becker, president of Etworth’s Old Harp Singers, said students are welcome and not required to bring any food or money.
“We’ve been doing this since about 1976,” she said. “The potluck starts at 6:30, and students don’t have to bring anything. It’s designed for students that don’t get to go home. So we feed them … and the singing starts at 7:30.”
Thursday
Students can spread holiday cheer by volunteering at the Love Kitchen on Thanksgiving Day. Located at 2418 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Knoxville, the Love Kitchen serves regular meals on Wednesday and Thursday each week, according to its Web site.
Volunteer spots for Thanksgiving dinner fill up quickly, said Ray Abbas, president of the Board of Directors for the Love Kitchen. However, there is one opportunity still available on Thursday.
“One thing that we occasionally will need is people who will need to take a delivery route,” Abbas said. “People that are willing to take even a small route on Thanksgiving, maybe after they eat their meal, they can come by and volunteer.”
Abbas said the Love Kitchen expects to serve at least 2,000 in-house and delivery meals to the homebound, homeless and the elderly this Thanksgiving.
