If the week’s cabin fever sets upon you early, have no fear. Knox-Vegas has
something to offer all the time.
The biggest deal happening in town this week occurs Thursday night out west
in scenic Farragut. Country legend George Jones will perform at
Cotton Eyed Joe, the Knoxville area’s premier boot-scootin’ mecca.
Doors open at 6 and the show starts at 8. Admission is $20, a pretty steep
price, but heck — it’s George Jones. Cotton Eyed Joe is located at 11220
Outlet Drive, just off the Lovell Road Exit on I-40 West.
Student Performances:
David Vittetoe, a percussion student of F. Michael Combs, offers his
Senior Recital at 8 p.m. tonight in the UT Music Hall. On Tuesday,
Thomas Holton holds his Senior Recital in tuba. He is a student of
Sande MacMorran. Atticus Hensley, also a student of MacMorran,
performs his Senior Recital on the euphonium at 8 p.m. Friday. Recitals
such as these offer the UT community a listen to music other than what
appears on the local “club scene” — the talented individuals from our own
music program.
Musique, Non-stop:
At 10 p.m. tonight, at Manhattan’s in the Old City, Club
Eclectic hosts Knoxville’s newest soon-to-be legend, Joe King,
performing with his ensemble, the Joe King Trio. King moved to
Knoxville last year from Texas, and his “South Texas slide blues” has been
a hit around town. Col. Bruce Hampton calls King “a truly great guitar
player.” The Trio features Todd Overstreet, formerly of Freeway, on bass.
“Special guests” are promised, so you know anything could happen. Admission
is $3.
The Grammy Award-winning Pat Metheny Group performs at the historic
Tennessee Theatre at 8 p.m. tonight.
At 8 p.m. Tuesday at Thompson-Boling Arena, the Eagles will
attempt to perform their oft-postponed “Hell Freezes Over” concert. Rumor
has it that plenty of the over-priced tickets remain. Perhaps it’s a
supply-and-demand discrepancy.
The Samples perform at 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Electric Ballroom.
Their new CD, Autopilot, is real-live pop music. Tickets are
$10 in advance from Tickets Unlimited outlets.
Cuttin’ Heads perform at 9:30 Wednesday evening at Manhattan’s.
Admission is $3.
At 8 p.m. Thursday, the UT Civic Orchestra will perform a Faculty
Concerto Concert in the UT Music Hall. Kirk Trevor will conduct.
Admission is $2.
The Black Velvet Dogs (featuring world’s tallest poet/drummer Danny
Wade) will play at 9:30 p.m. Thursday at Sassy Ann’s. These fellows are one
of Knoxville’s favorite blues-a-billy rockers. Admission is $2.
Talkin’ About Stuff:
Maggie Taylor, the artist whose photographs have adorned the
University Center Concourse throughout January, will lecture on her work at
7 p.m. tonight in UC 221.
Manhattan’s Open Mic Writer’s Night happens at 8 p.m. every Tuesday,
featuring the wacky improv of Einstein Simplified. It’s free and
there’s food.
Java, a Coffee House jumps on the open-mic bandwagon with its very
own Poetry Night, at 8 p.m. Tuesdays. It’s free and there’s
coffee.
Rus’ Romper Room is the new poetry show at Gryphon’s, at 9
p.m. every Tuesday. It’s the rough stuff, enter at your own risk (so to
speak).
