Whether your parents are UT alumni or they never had the chance to go to college, they all deserve a taste of the college experience. Let them relive their younger years through being a Vol with you this Fall Family Weekend.
Take them on a nostalgic tour of the city and visit spots that bring back fond memories so they can enjoy the campus as if they were students once more.
Tailgates
Several vibrant, orange tents decorate the campus to prepare for game days in Neyland. You and your parents can stroll around and soak in the sights and excitement of the game day setup.
Let your parents look back at their Greek life involvement by taking them to Fraternity Row. This part of campus has a lively atmosphere as they offer drinks, food and live music. Each frat will be buzzing with college students who are dressed up festively for the game.
If your parents attended a big SEC school where tailgating and games are the highlight of the fall semester, this will take them back to those cherished college memories.
Saturday football
After tailgating, it is only right to continue the fun at Neyland Stadium to watch the Vols play football.
Experiencing Neyland Stadium illuminated during this Saturday’s night game against Kent State will be unforgettable for your family. With everything from the band at the halftime show to the vibrant football atmosphere, there’s something for each parent to enjoy.
Famous landmarks
Every college, big or small, has their own iconic sites that represent their school. While your parents are on Rocky Top, it is encouraged they take pictures and visit UT’s various Smokey statues. Statues are located outside of Clement Hall, Hodges Library, Circle Park and other locations of importance to the university.
Also located in Circle Park is the Torchbearer, UT’s official academic mascot. According to UT’s website, the Torchbearer reminds the Vols of the message that “One that beareth a torch shadoweth oneself to give light to others,” as the historic statue lights the way with a never-ending fire on its torch.
Another significant attraction is the famous, painted Rock. This structure is located by the Student Health Center and is a legendary symbol that represents UT’s history. The Rock has been there since the 1960s and continues to be painted for special occasions every year.
Hit the town
Allow your parents to get the full undergraduate experience at UT’s bars. Some of these include LiterBoard, Undeclared Bar & Grill and The Half Barrel. Even though a lot of these bars have their quirks, they create a memorable experience that can make them think back to visiting their own timeless bars in college.
The Strip
Cumberland Avenue is one of the most well-known streets on campus. The Strip is always crowded and known as a popular spot among students. Additionally, it may remind your parents of their own version of the Strip from their college town.
Downtown Knoxville
Other entertainment options that are not on campus can be found in downtown Knoxville. There are several shops to explore with your parents, especially in Market Square.
Market Square gives the feel of a vibrant park filled with bustling hubs of activity. One unique feature is the mural artwork of Dolly Parton, a beloved celebrity among Vol fans.
The local restaurants serve a variety of tasty foods including everything from classic American to seafood. For a sweet treat, there are candy and dessert places to choose from in the Square.
After your meal, it is recommended to shop around the block. There is an abundance of souvenir options available, including a variety of clothing stores, unique art shops and more.
These establishments are special to UT for all generations to try and enjoy. The traditions and places here can take them back to their college years and create a sense of nostalgia. Visiting these areas is a meaningful way to show appreciation for those who help pay for your college expenses.
