Mother’s Day is coming up soon on Sunday, May 12. Unfortunately, this holiday is right in between finals for students at UT, which means that some students may be unable to celebrate with their mothers in person.
It can also be difficult for college students to find the money to buy a gift for their mother, especially with shipping costs and taxes. Luckily, there are some affordable ways to still cherish this holiday even when being miles apart.
Create a hand-written card
One gesture that you can do is send your mother a card through the mail. There are plenty of stores that sell cards for this holiday as well as several cards you can buy online.
To make this a fun and cheap activity, you can handcraft your own Mother’s Day card instead of purchasing one from the store. Some may see this as a more personal gift because you can make it however you want it to be. There is also something meaningful about seeing someone else’s handwriting that is written for you.
Make a Mother’s Day drawing
Like the personal card, you can hand-draw a cute picture for your mother. You do not have to be a talented artist to do this idea. There are plenty of Mother’s Day-related images on the internet for inspiration that you can draw and color.
Send her flowers
Sending flowers is another gift that is not as expensive but is also very meaningful. This is a chance to send your mother her favorite flowers so that she can put them in her home. If sending her real flowers is not an option, you can always send her virtual flowers. There are tons of GIFs and images to send with a lot of options to choose from.
Give her a call
While texting her Happy Mother’s Day is always a good option, calling her can make her feel more special. Whether you decide to FaceTime or call, being able to have a conversation on the phone can feel just like you are talking to her in person.
Gift her a candle
Candles are another simple gift that can remind your mother that you are thinking about her on her special day. You can purchase a candle and craft your own message. If you cannot think of something to write, you can also buy a candle that has a sweet or humorous message.
Make a gift basket with spa items
A spa-day gift basket is an option for those who cannot book a massage appointment for their mothers. Any convenience store will have a variety of products for you to add to the basket. Some ideas are soaps, face masks, lotions, body scrubs, hair masks and more.
Plan a future visit
Sometimes it can be comforting to look forward to something in the future. If you cannot spend the day with your mother on the actual day, you can plan a fun activity or adventure to do with her the next time you see her. This can include planning on going on a hike, going to the pool or going shopping together.
Grab a bite to eat
This idea is easier for people who are a couple of hours away from their mothers. She can pick a restaurant that is half the distance between you, and you can meet her there. Although it could be a short visit, it can still be worthwhile.
