On Tuesday, Oct. 14, the Student Government Association Senate held its sixth session of the year.
This meeting featured a bill proposal, proclamation presentation and comments from students regarding events of the previous session which was held on Tuesday, Sept. 30.
First readings: Student safety
Sens. Jonathan Martinez and Kevin Ho sponsored Bill 25-1, the Encouragement of Safety Act. This bill would allow for students to earn a T-Credit upon downloading the Safe at UT app.
Martinez and Ho recognized there was a low adoption rate of the Safe at UT app among students. They looked to address this issue by connecting their peers with campus safety resources. They presented the bill as an opportunity to heighten awareness and increase engagement through tools such as the app.
“Being able to have that outreach and engagement for the UT community, especially when it comes from an app designed for student safety in mind is something that we felt as a committee was something we wanted to pursue.” Ho said.
Bill 25-1 was moved to second readings where it will undergo further review by the Access and Engagement committee. If the bill passes, starting next spring, students will receive one T-Credit for downloading the Safe at UT app.
Proclamations: Breast cancer awareness
Proclamation 25-1, written by Sergeant-at-Arms Aastha Oza and presented by Sen. Kristen Kennelly, was introduced. This proclamation serves to honor and recognize the women who have fought and are fighting against the disease of breast cancer. The proclamation also aims to provide information surrounding early detection and screening of the disease.
“As a premed student … for me, studying diseases and cancer have been something that I have been really passionate about,” Oza said. “I wanted to raise awareness on breast cancer, especially it being breast cancer awareness month, and how significant that disease can impact a woman’s life.”
Proclamation 25-1 was voted into approval by the senate with 97% in favor.
