Tennessee baseball is aiming for its second sweep of the early season.
The Vols will host the Kent State Golden Flashes in a three-game series after starting the season undefeated. The Vols swept Nicholls 3-0 to begin the year and notched their fourth victory over UNC Asheville, defeating them 10-3.
The Golden Flashes also began the year with a 3-0 sweep against Southeastern Louisiana before losing to LSU in a close 10-7 game. Kent State will be looking to return to the win column against its second SEC opponent of the young season.
These are the top Kent State players to watch during this weekend’s series.
Utility Sawyer Solitaria
Sawyer Solitaria has quickly become a standout player for the Golden Flashes. In his first season, he was named the Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year and to the All-MAC First Team.
Now in his sophomore year, Solitaria leads Kent State with 10 hits, seven RBIs and four home runs. His .526 batting average and 1.158 slugging percentage also lead the Golden Flashes
He was named the MAC Player of the Week after his season-opening performance against the Southeastern Louisiana Lions. In the three-game series, he hit three home runs and boasted a .571 batting average and 1.214 slugging percentage. In right field, he recorded nine putouts. Solitaria has been named to USA Baseball’s 2026 Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List.
Pitcher Ciaran Caughey
Senior Ciaran Caughey claimed the first win of the season in his five-inning performance against the Lions. Caughey struck out eight batters and allowed only three hits and one walk, all of which led the team. The Lions went scoreless while he was on the mound. He also leads the Golden Flashes with a .158 opposing batting average.
Caughey is in his fourth year at Kent State and has consistently moved up the ranks during his tenure. After losing one of their top pitchers, Jacob Bean, to the transfer portal, Caughey became someone the Golden Flashes could rely on this season, especially in their series against the Vols.
Catcher Brody Williams
Brody Williams has been a staple of the Golden Flashes defense. The senior catcher leads the team in almost every fielding statistic. He is tied for first in fielding percentage with 1.000 and has done it on a team-leading 27 total chances. His 27 putouts also lead Kent State. His performance last year earned him a preseason ranking of the 30th-best catcher in the nation.
Williams’ impact has been felt on offense as well. He is tied for second on the team in both RBIs and home runs with six and two, respectively. His .647 slugging percentage ranks fourth for the Golden Flashes.
