The border battle takes its show to the hardwood.
Tennessee basketball hosts Kentucky for the first of two meetings between the conference foes. The No. 24 Vols (12-5, 2-2 SEC) likely are not fresh, coming off a double-overtime win over Texas A&M and the infamous ‘Bucky Ball’ system. Kentucky (11-6, 2-2), meanwhile, enters with another tight contest, needing a Malachi Moreno elbow jumper at the buzzer to overcome LSU on the road.
Both teams have been contested this season, combining for 11 losses in mid-January. Tennessee is hardly clinging to its 90th-consecutive week with an AP Poll ranking, but it cut it close with two uncharacteristic losses to Arkansas and Florida to begin conference play. Kentucky has struggled to operate as a team, which has brought six losses to the table in year two under Mark Pope.
The Wildcats are led by second-year transfer Otega Oweh with 15.8 points per game. Florida transfer Denzel Aberdeen follows behind as the only other double-digit per-game scorer at 11.6 a night. Tennessee has two double-digit scorers of its own, coming by way of Ja’Kobi Gillespie’s 18.2 a night and Nate Ament’s 15.4 per night. The two have been the heartbeat of Tennessee basketball this season, and both put in 40-plus minutes on the court a couple of nights ago against Texas A&M.
Kentucky is the squad that Tennessee has beaten the most all-time. The Vols’ 79 wins over the Wildcats clear second-place Vanderbilt by 29 victories.
