The International House is a place where The University of Tennessee students from more than 100 different countries, including the United States, relax, recreate and feel at home.

The International House, located at 1623 Melrose Ave., offers a variety of amenities and events to encourage communication, Director David Lawson said.

“I look and see people from all over getting along here,” Lawson said. “And if we can do it here, we can do it anywhere.”

There are many activities in which students can participate. One of the many activities regularly held includes Global Hour, a weekly discussion discussing world topics.

Other prowtf you grams are the Language Tables where every Thursday, starting in September, people can choose a language they are interested in and practice their skills. Fluent speakers converse in Spanish, French or Japanese.

Activities include cooking demonstrations, international film series, dance lessons, hiking trips, a Boomsday cookout and many other activities which can be viewed on the International House’s Web site.

These events are open to all UT students and the surrounding community.

“It’s the only place on campus where you’re immersed in a lot of different cultures,” Erum A. Saukat, junior in nutrition, said.

Students can become active members in the International Student Council, which presently is an independent student body. The organization acts as an aid for foreign students as they adjust to life in America.
