UPDATE:
Some portions of the roadways are being opened by KUB as work continues on the water main, according to an email update from UT Facilities Services.
Drivers will be able to go from Neyland Drive onto Lake Loudoun Boulevard as KUB opens it to traffic, but will not be allowed to turn onto Lake Loudoun from Phillip Fulmer Way for the time being.
Drivers can also travel between Volunteer Boulevard and the top deck of the Administration Parking Garage, as well as Johnny Majors Drive.
However, the closure from Chamique Holdsclaw and Phillip Fulmer to the Administration Parking Garage is expected to continue until at least Thursday.
UT Facilities Services is still advising that drivers avoid the area as much as possible.
A water main break has closed Lake Loudoun Boulevard on UT’s campus.
UT Facilities Services sent an email to students, faculty and staff at approximately 6:45 a.m. on Wednesday, alerting them to the break. The break closed Lake Loudoun Boulevard from Neyland Drive to Volunteer Boulevard, according to the email.
“Traffic will need to avoid this area,” the email reads. “Closure will likely last most of the day.”
UT Facilities Services Zone Maintenance Director Terry Ledford said there is no current timeline for the road to reopen. There wasn’t a particular cause to the water main break; it could have been the age of the piping or the ground shifting.
The main problem with the break was that it left a coating of mud from Volunteer Boulevard to Neyland Drive, which officials are working to clean up.
“Biggest issue was it just washed out a lot of mud,” Ledford said.
Since the waterline was owned by KUB, utilities officials are handling the cleanup. Had the waterline been UT Facilities Services-owned, school workers would handle the process.
The break likely won’t affect many students. Classes for the 2018-2018 school year don’t begin until Aug. 22.
