The deadline for tax returns in Tennessee is rapidly approaching on Nov. 3. This final extension includes all counties of Tennessee taxpayers affected by natural disasters like severe storms and floods, which began on April 2, 2025.
The new deadline provides statewide financial reprieve for Tennesseans managing hefty recovery costs from spring disasters, while preserving equitable access to the normal deductions, credits and electronic filing options available through the IRS and Tennessee Department of Revenue. All individuals and businesses are eligible for this extension in the state of Tennessee.
The IRS and the Tennessee Department of Revenue extended deadlines following the federal disaster declaration issued by FEMA after severe storms, tornadoes and flooding beginning on April 2, 2025.
The IRS disaster relief policy allows automatic extensions for any taxpayer living or doing business in a declared disaster area, meaning all 95 counties in Tennessee are eligible to take advantage of this extension.
Each resident in Tennessee can file electronically through the Department of Revenue’s online portal or approved tax software. Approved tax softwares include TurboTax, Drake Tax and IRS Direct File.
All Tennessee-approved software integrates with TNTAP, the state’s official filing website. Taxpayers who prefer to self-file can log into TNTAP directly to submit franchise, excise and sales tax returns without needing a separate vendor account.
First, residents need to gather proper documentation such as W-2s, interest or dividend statements and prior-year returns.
Then, select the proper form, whether for business franchise and excise taxes or investment income taxes.
After choosing the form, calculate deductions and credits. Tennessee offers limited individual tax credits, but businesses can claim credits for investments or job creation.
Finally, file online or by mail before the Nov. 3 deadline to avoid any penalties.
Taxpayers affected by the April disasters may claim disaster-related losses on either their 2024 or 2025 federal tax return. When doing so, they should include FEMA disaster number 3625-EM on their filing.
