Old age, hair loss, Alzheimer’s, bad hearing and senior discounts will be celebrated at the University Center tomorrow.

From 12 to 2 p.m., at the UC Bookstore, fans have the chance to meet Sam Venable and pick up a signed copy of his new book, You Gotta Laugh to Keep from Cryin’.

In his third book, Venable discusses aging and the losses that it brings.

“You Gotta Laugh to Keep from Cryin’ is an explanation of the ups and the downs of life over 50,” said Tom Post, associate communications specialist at UT Press. “Venable deals with memory loss, car hair and an AARP membership; he also celebrates his new senior citizen discount and the ability to ignore just about anyone while claiming hearing loss.

“Plus, he can forget birthdays and anniversaries and then blame it on a study saying men’s brains shrink faster than women’s,” he added.

The UT Bookstore is expecting a big turnout for the Knoxville native.

“Sam Venable is one of our most successful book signings,” said Sue Ludwig, manager of the UT Bookstore. “People always want to talk to him especially since he’s a local.”

Fans shouldn’t fret if they have yet to pick up their copies; the bookstore has several copies on sale for $17.95.

Venable writes a humor column for The News Sentinel and has been recognized for three years by the Tennessee Press Association. He also has two other books to his credit: Rock-Elephant: A Story of Friendship and Fishing and Mountain Hands: A Portrait of Southern Appalachia.

All of his titles are published by UT Press and are available at bookstores throughout the Knoxville area.
