The Knoxville Zoo is looking for people who enjoy working with animals, trips and discounts.

A volunteer fair will be held on Saturday from 1-3 p.m. at the Zoo Conference Center.

“Potential volunteers are invited to attend anytime during the fair and should register at the zoo’s ranger station,” said William Becker, media relations manager for the zoo. “Zoo staff and volunteers will be available during this time to answer any questions guests may have regarding the program.”

The zoo currently has about 150 volunteers who perform a variety of tasks including assisting with education programs, working with zookeepers, helping with exhibit interpretations and special events, and conducting outreach programs.

Although it may sound like a lot of work, volunteering at the Knoxville Zoo does have its perks.

“Volunteers receive benefits such as a zoo shop discount, special trips and behind the scenes orientations of exhibits,” Becker said.

Volunteering at the zoo looks good on any student’s resume.

“I think it sounds like a lot of fun to work with the animals,” said Eric Aguilar, a senior in psychology. “When students look for community service activities, they usually end up doing something that sounds good, but they don’t necessarily enjoy it. Volunteering at the zoo would be fun and spices up the resume by adding something different. Besides, how many chances do you get to go behind the scenes at the zoo?”

Knoxville Zoo volunteers must be at least 18 years old, a zoo member and attend a training course.
