The Muslim Student Association invites all students to attend its second movie night of the semester.
Steve Martin, a local Methodist minister, will present his documentary “Islam in America after September 11: A Documentary Video.”
“It is a comprehensive video that looks at different Muslim lives and how they were affected,” said Sanjana Ahmad, MSA president. “The video takes a glimpse of different Muslim communities and how they dealt with life after Sept. 11.”
Ahmad continued by describing the impact of Sept. 11 on everyone, including Muslims.
“The events of 9/11 have had a great effect on the lives of Americans, both Muslims and non-Muslims alike,” she said. “It offers a true depiction of the way the American-Muslim community suffered and served along with the rest of their American neighbors. American-Muslim leaders, including Hamza Yusuf Hanson, are interviewed along with Muslims from all walks of life. ”
Topics, such as the harassment of Muslims, civil rights and war are also discussed in the documentary.
“With the war in Iraq, the focus is being brought to Muslims, and questions have been addressed to them and their role in America,” Ahmad said. “Basic things like this will help people understand. It will also help make this a better place, because they will understand the person next door.”
Martin is expected to provide an introduction and answer the audience’s questions at the end of the film.
“He will tell us how he made it and will be available for a question-answer session,” Ahmad said. “(Martin) will share his perspective as a Christian and what he learned through making this video.”
MSA is scheduling other events this month, such as a concert and a movie-poetry night. All of the events are focused on teaching the community and bringing about awareness.
“These events will hopefully give you an understanding of the beliefs and practices of adherents to one of the world’s major religions,” Ahmad said. “They will be beneficial to all who attend.”
Movie night is tonight at 7 in the Hodges Library Auditorium.
