Beads, bright colors, knits, embroidery and faux leather top this year’s list of trends for swimwear.
Jeweled images are the rave for the beach this spring, because they are arranged to create fluid motion. Swimsuits are accented with items ranging from turquoise stones to beads.
If you want to give an eyeful without the beaded hassle, flashy colors will do the trick.
Whether you’re a guy or girl, bold, bright colors are a must for this year’s suits. While perusing through the mall in search of the perfect swimwear, one will notice that everything is bright. This year’s colors are more exiting tones such as orange, red, yellow, lime and turquoise.
Sarah Wolfe, an associate manager at Pacific Sunwear, said the biggest items selling this season are Roxy, Rusty and Billabong triangle tops and lowrise bikini bottoms in Hawaiian print and hibiscus flowers.
Wolfe said that some suits at Pacific Sunwear had some details like beads and bamboo-looking accents but not much embroidery.
“Really bright colors this year seem to be really popular – a lot of turquoise,” Wolfe said. “They seem to be kind of retro, like in … old movies, you see that a lot of bikini bottoms are low rise and have the ties on the side.”
The ’70s are definitely back for the ladies. Retro knitted suits are becoming bigger and bigger with each passing year. One could do the classical look or mix and match to create your own sensual style. Crochet pieces often come in dolman tops, boy shorts and sarongs.
Ladies, it’s all about detail. Little things like pleats, fringing, shirring and overstitching draw attention to the shape and form of the body. Furthermore, patterns that include embroidery, sequins and tropical themes also draw attention. Virtually every designer this season is using these approaches for both beachwear and apparel.
Students also prefer the detailing approach.
“I don’t like the beaded suits,” Jennifer Price, a senior in accounting, said. “I’ve seen quite a few items with palm trees, and I like those.”
Faux leather is also making an appearance on the beach this year. Faux leather swimwear sticks to you to accentuate the curves on the body. Coming in colors like cinnamon, navy and bronze, faux leather beachwear boasts plunging necklines and invisible underwires.
Accessorizing with your swimwear is also a must. Flip-flops are always a good, comfortable choice along with the right pair of shades.
Wolfe said denim shorts, short denim skirts and board shorts are big sellers when it comes to accessorizing, as well as straw hats and sunglasses.
