Relay for Life, an all-night event to benefit the American Cancer Society’s research, now has an official planning organization on campus.
In short, it’s a fun way to raise money and awareness.
“Relay for Life is a 12-hour, overnight event filled with music activities and entertainment where teams of walkers and runners compete against each other to raise the most money,” Logan Powers, publicity chair for Relay For Life, said.
The event is scheduled for April 4 at Circle Park Drive, and the entertainment for the evening is already being planned.
“Throughout the night, we will have several popular local bands and various other activities to keep all the participants excited and having a blast,” Powers said.
The reason for the celebration will not be forgotten during the fun of the night. A candlelight ceremony is held in honor and remembrance.
“The highlight of the event is the beautiful luminaria service held after dark to honor all the cancer survivors and to remember those who have lost their battle against cancer,” Powers said. “The luminaria line the track and are left burning through the night to remind all the participants of the incredible importance of their contribution.”
All UT students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate in the event by forming a team of eight to 15 people.
“The event will be held for UT faculty, staff and students,” Powers said. “There are several cancer survivors on our campus, and this is a great way for us to come together, have fun, honor and remember all of those individuals, all while raising money for cancer research.”
Becoming an official organization on campus is a small step for a big cause.
“Relay For Life is an important organization because cancer seems to touch almost every person’s life in some way,” Powers said. “It would be quite a statement to say you lived your entire life and never knew anyone with cancer.”
