The third annual Jewish Film Festival will take place at Regal Cinema Art at Downtown West on Nov. 2 through Nov. 4.

“A committee of 14 people made up of UT students, faculty and community members watched the movies and chose their favorites,” said Moema Furtado, the festival’s coordinator. “We are bringing again this year, the finest independent Jewish films to Knoxville.”

Opening night will feature Time of Favor, a controversial Israeli movie that won six Israeli Academy Awards. The movie will start at 8 tonight.

Shalom Y’all will be showing Nov. 3 at 1:30 p.m.

“Shalom Y’all is a documentary feature film about the Jewish experience in the American South as told through the eyes of a native son and the cultural cousins he encounters,” Furtado said.

The festival continues Sunday with Schmelvis; Searching for the King’s Jewish Roots at 3 p.m. This movie follows the journey of a Jewish Elvis impersonator Don Hartal and Rabbi Reuben Poupko as the two travel to uncover The King’s roots after being tipped off by a 1998 Wall Street Journal article exposing Elvis’ improbable Jewish lineage.

“The film festival is not only a fun and informative event, but an event that promotes diversity and understanding within our community,” Furtado said. “Jewish movies would never make it to Knoxville otherwise.

“The movies touch on different topics that relate to everyone, not just Jewish people,” she said.

Advance student tickets cost $3 and are available at the Arnstein Jewish Community Center on Dean Hill Drive.

If students wait to purchase tickets at the theater, the cost will increase to $4.75.
