The University of Tennessee offers more than just homework and exams in the summer. Students, faculty and staff can also get a taste of competition by participating in intramural sports. This summer prospective athletes can choose from softball, three-on-three basketball, singles and doubles tennis and golf.
Jackie Moffett, program director, said anyone who enrolled last spring, is taking summer courses or is registered for fall is eligible to play this summer.
“This is a great opportunity to hang out with friends and compete in games,” he said.
There is no cost to participate in intramural sports, with the exception of golf. Golf’s greens fee is $11 to walk and $16 to ride.
Golf matches will be held at Pine Lakes. All other sports will be held on campus.
“Time is a huge factor when deciding to participate in extracurricular activities,” Moffett said. Intramural sports are held one or two days a week depending on the sport. Softball is played on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, three-on-three basketball tips off on Wednesdays, golf tees off on Thursdays and singles and doubles tennis varies depending on the student’s personal schedule.
David Tippett, a senior in history, enjoys intramural sports because they are relaxing and give everyone a chance to participate.
“It is a release from school,” he said.
The intramural veteran said that the program gives former high school athletes, like himself, the opportunity to compete during college. For those who are not athletically inclined, Tippett said that intramural sports are a way to take your mind off of school, to meet new people and to have a good time.
Moffett agreed with Tippett’s casual assessment of summer intramurals; however, he said that summer sports lack participants compared to the fall and spring sports. He said the staff is hoping for a better turn out this summer to increase competition.
Registration has already begun in Room 202 in the Aquatic Center. June 5 is the last day to sign up.
Games are set to begin June 11.
