The Department of Broadcasting is offering an exciting opportunity for
international students to bring their experience into the classroom. The
course, Broadcasting 550, or International Radio-TV, will be taught by Sam
Swan, professor of broadcasting.
According to Swan, the course includes an overview of how broadcasting
systems are structured, funded, regulated and programmed. In addition,
students will learn about international systems of broadcasting, including
the Voice of America and the British Broadcasting Corporation. The impact
of satellite technology and VCR usage will also be examined.
The course is offered once a year during the summer, and is an opportunity
for all students to broaden their perspective on communications and
broadcasting from around the world.
“International students are especially encouraged to enroll in the class
because they bring firsthand knowledge and experience with the broadcasting
systems in their own countries,” Swan said. That way, native, as well as
international students will acquire a more enriched, balanced understanding
of broadcasting globally.
Swan said the course will not only teach students about broadcast systems,
but will offer a new knowledge and understanding of cultures outside of the
United States. Also, the class counts as an upper-level distribution for
many students.
This summer, Broadcasting 550 will be offered second session, Monday
through Friday from 9:45 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. For more information, contact
the Department of Broadcasting at 974-4291. Students can enroll by
contacting the UT Evening School at 974-5144. The section number for this
class is 09040.
