Ovi Kabir served as UT’s Student Government Association (SGA) president for the 2018-2019 academic year, and he graduated in May with a degree in political science. This past summer, he was chosen to be a contestant on the 21st season of CBS’s reality show, “Big Brother.” Here are 8 things to know about Ovi:
Kabir and his girlfriend, Hannah Blackwell, share a corgi named Mowgli.
They take him to drive-in movies, throw him birthday parties with his four-legged friends and even run an Instagram account for him, @mowglithecorgii.
He stands up for people who are being bullied.
While competing on “Big Brother,” Kabir noticed some houseguests treating others with disrespect. He even experienced some of it himself but refused to stand for it. “Growing up, I experienced a lot of ostracization, people trying to push you to the side. I grew from it into a better person. But what makes me upset is when that happens to other people,” he said in an interview with “Parade”magazine.
He aspires to be a role model for fellow Bangladishi-Americans.
“I hope if there’s a small brown kid out there watching ‘Big Brother,’ they felt proud watching me on the season. I hope I did them a service,” Kabir said when speaking with “Parade.” His CBS biography states that the three adjectives he would use to describe himself are, “relatable, motivated and brown.”
He proudly wears Crocs.
He told CBS one of the items he’d like to bring into the “Big Brother” house are his orange Crocs. According to “Knox News,” he has ten pairs of them.
He loves Tennessee Basketball.
In an interview with CBS, Kabirmentioned that one of his hobbies is watching the UT basketball team win their games. He also said one of the things he’d bring into the “Big Brother”house is his Power T Tennessee Pin.
He drives a 2001 Toyota Minivan he named “The White Stallion.”
Orange checkerboards are painted on the side doors and a Power T on the hood. He once drove the minivan six hours in the summer with no air conditioning to see girlfriend Hannah Blackwell.
He was voted out in week 4 of “Big Brother.”
Despite his short run on the show, and being excluded at times, Kabir has stayed positive about his experience.
His life motto is, “Why not me?”
He told CBS, “I have gone through my life with this motto and I always question that since someone has to do a specific, why can’t that person be me? I have full confidence in myself and my abilities to achieve the goals and dreams that I seek and make my imagination a reality.” Kabir’s confidence could be very inspirational to other UT students.
Kabir has proven himself to be a great role model and representative of the University of Tennessee.
