Ah — February. Love is in the air, and everyone is getting ready to take that special someone on a date for Valentine’s day.
What is the first thing that comes to most people’s minds when they think “date”? The movies, of course! Whether you want to take your date to a spooky movie or simply want to go have a laugh at the cinemas, there’s something for you coming out this weekend.
The Lego Movie 2
The sequel to 2015’s critically acclaimed “The Lego Movie” is finally releasing this weekend. The first film was so beloved by audiences and critics that it not only spawned a sequel, but also two spin-off films: “The Lego Batman Movie” and “The Lego Ninjago Movie” in 2017. In “The Lego Movie 2,” four years have passed since the events of the first film. Everything is decidedly not awesome as evil “Duplo” aliens have destroyed the peaceful city of Bricksburg, turning it into the grittier “Apocalypseburg.” This hasn’t phased Emmett Brickowski, the “special” from the first film. He clings to the notion that everything is still awesome. His ideals are challenged, however, when invaders from the “Systar” system kidnap all of his friends, and he is forced to rescue them. “The Lego Movie 2” features the voice talents of Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Tiffany Haddish, Alison Brie and many more.

What Men Want
This re-imagining of the 2000 film “What Women Want,” “What Men Want” is the newest comedy from Adam Shankman. Shankman is the director of hit comedies such as 2007’s “Hairspray,” 2008’s “Bedtime Stories” and 2012’s “Rock of Ages.” After female sports agent Ali Davis fails to get a promotion yet again because of a male colleague, she inexplicably gains the power to hear men’s thoughts. She then puts her sights on signing the next basketball superstar using her newfound power. The film stars Taraji P. Henson, Aldis Hodge and Tracy Morgan. Fans of comedy will not want to miss “What Men Want” this weekend.
The Prodigy
The “creepy children” sub-genre of horror returns to theaters this weekend with “The Prodigy.” The film centers around Miles, a young boy who seems to have a genius-level intellect. As he grows older, however, he begins to exhibit disturbing behavior signals. This leads his mother Sarah to begin suspecting that he is under the influence of a sinister supernatural force. As things go from bad to worse, Taylor is forced to look for answers in the past as the lines of perception and reality begin to blur. The film stars Taylor Schilling, Jackson Robert Scott and Peter Mooney. It might not be a typical date movie, but if you’re a pair of horror fans, “The Prodigy” is for you.
Cold Pursuit
What happens when you combine dark comedy, Liam Neeson and R-rated action? You get “Cold Pursuit,” remake of the 2014 Norwegian film “In Order of Disappearance.” Mild-mannered Nels Coxman finds his life thrown into chaos after his son is murdered under mysterious circumstances. His search for answers quickly turns into a quest for justice and vengeance as he begins to dismantle an entire drug cartel. The film stars Liam Neeson, Laura Dern, Emmy Rossum and Tom Bateman. If you want something with over-the-top action and dark humor, “Cold Pursuit” might be worth checking out.
