April has finally arrived, signaling an end to the semester. The semester’s upcoming end is exciting, but April is also a month of stress, exams, and final projects. One of the best ways to get a break from constantly worrying about that calculus exam coming up is catching one of this week’s newest film releases in theaters.
Shazam!
With Superhero films being at peak popularity, many have begun to experience fatigue with the genre. That’s why film studios are experimenting with the genre, giving us slightly more unconventional superhero films. “Shazam!” is one of the first DC films in recent years to break away from the dark and moody tone of films like “The Dark Knight” and “Man of Steel”, following the lead of 2018’s “Aquaman”.
The film follows Billy Batson, a troubled orphan who jumps from foster home to foster home. His life is drastically changed, however, when he is selected to inherit the powers of an ancient wizard named Shazam. The film stars Zachary Levi, Mark Strong, Asher Angel and Jack Dylan Grazer. Anyone who has ever wished to become a superhero will surely get a kick out of “Shazam!”.
Pet Sematary
A remake of the 1989 film of the same name, “Pet Sematary” is the first film based on a Stephen King novel to be released since 2017’s surprise hit, “It”. Based off of the 1983 novel and 1989 movie of the same name, “Pete Sematary” follows Dr. Louis Creed and his family.
After moving from Boston to a rural community in Maine, Creed’s children discover a strange burial ground. After an unthinkable tragedy strikes their family, Creed quickly learns that “sometimes dead is better”. The film stars Jason Clarke, Amy Seimetz and John Lithgow. Horror fanatics will not want to miss out on what looks to be the next great remake.
The Best of Enemies
Based on a true story of unlikely friendship, “The Best of Enemies” comes to theaters this weekend. During the summer of 1971, the civil rights movement is making huge strides for equality in North Carolina. Segregation in schools, however, still plagues the community of Durham.
Half of the community, led by civil rights activist Ann Atwater, strives for desegregation. The other half, led by Ku Klux Klan leader C.P. Ellis, wants segregation to remain in the community. As the debate and battle rages on, Atwater and Ellis begin to form a relationship that would change both of their lives forever. The film stars Taraji P. Henson, Sam Rockwell, Babou Ceesay and Anne Heche. Those looking for a moving story of justice and friendship will not want to miss “The Best of Enemies” this weekend.
