Spring break is nearly upon us, and with it comes a slew of new movies to watch in theaters while enjoying your time off. Whether you want to spend your break with bleak sci-fi, colorful animation or romantic drama, chances are there’s something coming to theaters this weekend that you’ll absolutely love.
Captive State
Rupert Wyatt, director the 2011 blockbuster “Rise of the Planet of the Apes”, brings us another movie about the world changing as we know it. This time, instead of apes taking over the world, it’s aliens. Ten years after an extraterrestrial force known as “The Legislature” has taken over the world, a group of human rebels known as “Phoenix” has begun to rise. Chicago police officer Mulligan recruits young Phoenix member Gabriel to try and take down The Legislature for good and reclaim earth for humanity.
In a time when many Americans have fake news on their minds, “Captive State” looks to comment on the role of the government in the lives of its citizens and how believing everything you are told can be dangerous. The film stars John Goodman, Ashton Sanders, Jonathan Majors and Machine Gun Kelly. It makes its way to theaters this Friday.
Wonder Park
For those looking to spend their break watching something a little more upbeat and happy, “Wonder Park” may be the film for you. Young June spends all of her time working on creating a theme park for her neighborhood, which she calls “Wonder Park”. While she has fun making small homemade roller coasters in her backyard, she longs for her theme park to become a reality.
But one day, while running home through the woods, she finds herself in the very theme park that she once thought was made up. The park, however, is being destroyed by the evil “Chimpanzombies” — and only June can save it. The film stars Brianna Denski, Ken Hudson Campbell, Jennifer Garner, Matthew Broderick and Kennan Thompson. “Wonder Park” looks to be the perfect film for those looking to tap into their imagination, or those that simply need something for the whole family.
Five Feet Apart
If Science Fiction or animation isn’t your thing but you love a good tear jerker, you may want to see “Five Feet Apart”. The film revolves around Stella Grant and Will Newman, two teenagers living with cystic fibrosis. The two meet while in the hospital and form a bond that moves quickly from friendship into something more romantic.
Unfortunately for Stella and Will, cystic fibrosis patients must stay several feet apart from one another so that they will not become infected with any bacteria the other is carrying. The disease brought the two of them together — but it very well may be the thing that keeps them apart. The film stars Haley Lu Richardson, Cole Sprouse, Moises Arias and Kimberly Herbert Gregory. If you cried like a baby while watching films like “The Fault in Our Stars” but still watched it five times, you’ll probably like “Five Feet Apart” just as much.
