When Suki Waterhouse’s newest single, “Back in Love,” was released at midnight on March 27, it was clear she was back.
After concluding her Memoir of a Sparklemuffin tour and welcoming her first child, Waterhouse took a brief pause from releasing new music. Earlier in the month, on March 14, she teased the track on TikTok with a sneak peek and the caption, “I’m so back.”
The “Good Looking” singer has defined her sound and ambience. When you turn on one of Waterhouse’s songs, you know you’re about to enter a dream-like space with uplifting melodies and simple, yet moving lyrics. Whether joyful and fun or vulnerable and deep, her music has the power to move people effortlessly.
Since releasing her late-2024 album “Memoir of a Sparklemuffin,” Waterhouse has put out two standalone singles: “Dream Woman” and “On This Love.” She previously performed songs from the album, along with past hits, at London’s Wembley Stadium while opening for Taylor Swift on the Eras Tour.
“Back in Love” also marks her debut release with Island Records, which she signed with in August 2025. As part of Universal Music, the partnership makes future projects from Waterhouse especially exciting to anticipate.
With roughly 2.88 million streams as of April 14, “Back in Love” is a heartwarming, fun and personal song. It fits comfortably into her music catalogue while remaining fresh and unique in its own way.
The intro, in particular, captures the feeling of something new — almost like an announcement. In the first few counts, we’re pulled into a whimsical soundscape filled with harp-like strings and electric guitars. The chorus is instantly catchy — after one listen, it’s stuck in your head all day. It feels playful and memorable, while still carrying the casual, relatable tone that defines much of her music. The song also blends Waterhouse’s more alternative sound with the pop direction she has leaned into more in recent years.
The artistic design of both the album cover and music video reflect the song’s themes, using creative, romantic visuals to deepen the story. Blues, reds and pinks wash over the frame, while a retro-style lens gives the video a nostalgic glow, highlighting the careful attention to detail behind the release, especially impressive for an emerging artist. The video has already begun to find an audience, with over 300,000 views.
The album cover and music video depict Waterhouse being struck in the heart with arrows, visualizing the song’s message of falling back into love. The video closes with her opening a door, light spilling through the frame — as it swings open, she smiles before the screen fades to black. It’s a simple but effective moment that highlights her instinct for visual storytelling and adds another layer of charm to the track.
Not only are the lyrics in “Back in Love” relatable and fun, but Waterhouse’s vocal talent shines throughout the track. Her tone balances delicacy with quiet power, drawing listeners into the story she’s telling. She also consistently nails the artistic aesthetic surrounding her music. Each song, album and video feels creative, playful and occasionally non-linear. She isn’t afraid to take risks, and that sense of freedom — of an artist clearly enjoying the process — is exactly what makes her music so appealing.
UT senior Lola Wagner shared her thoughts on the new single.
“I first discovered Suki Waterhouse through the show ‘Daisy Jones & The Six.’ From there, I started listening to her more, and her new song ‘Back in Love’ is perfect for the summer because of the flowy vibe. It makes me happy to listen to,” Wagner said.
Waterhouse has discussed how her role as Karen Sirko in Amazon’s hit series “Daisy Jones & The Six” influenced her to create more music.
In an interview with Bazaar, Waterhouse said, “there was something about (Sirko’s) fearlessness about going after her passions that pushed me to finally go and make the album that I wanted to make … and, now, I get to play piano at my own shows.”
While Waterhouse largely keeps her personal life separate from her music career, glimpses of it inevitably shape how audiences experience her work. She shares a daughter with her longtime partner, Robert Pattinson, and that sense of happiness makes the video’s joyful, romantic imagery feel even more genuine, suggesting an artist whose creative world is currently rooted in a particularly bright chapter of life.
This single, along with her recent signing to Island Records and a string of high-profile appearances, including the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party, “The Drama” premiere, and hosting Spotify’s exclusive BTS: SWIMSIDE event in New York City, suggest that even more excitement may be on the horizon for the artist.
UT senior Quincy Peacock, who attended the “Memoir of a Sparklemuffin” performance at The Ryman in Nashville in 2024, is expecting an album following “Back in Love.”
“I knew (Waterhouse) was going to get bigger and more popular after I saw her for the first time. Her stage presence was so unique and versatile. I’m excited to see her back on stage … I’m usually not a big concert person, but (Waterhouse) is so fun to watch.”
While there has been no official announcement of a new album, Waterhouse continues to keep listeners on their toes, leaving plenty of anticipation around what she might create next.
