University of Tennessee Bassoon Professor Keith McClelland will perform in a recital at the Knoxville Museum of Art Sunday at 2 p.m.
McClelland will be assisted by fellow faculty members Fay Adams on piano, Wesley Baldwin on cello and Calvin Smith on French horn.
The performance will begin with “Sonata in G Minor” by Benedetto and “Sonate, Op. 71 Pour Bassoon et Piano” by Charles Koechlin McClelland said.
He said the Koechlin piece is very romantic and tonal for a 20th century work.
The performance will continue with “Sonata, K.292 for Bassoon and Violoncello” by W.A. Mozart and “Two Rags for Bassoon and Cello” by Arthur Frackenpohl.
“The rags are a lot of fun to play and listen to,” McClelland said.
The recital will include works by UT graduates Mark Harrell and Tim Miller.
McClelland will perform “Toccata, Aria and Fugue” by Harrell, third chair French horn in the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra.
McClelland will also play Miller’s “No Way Home,” “Chase the Wind,” and “Lullaby” and “March,” transcribed from the orchestral suite “Kid’s Play.”
“The recital should not be boring,” McClelland said.
The program includes many different styles of music. Most of the pieces are fairly short, only one song will be close to ten minutes.
In McClelland’s 35 years at UT, he has performed a recital almost every year. This is the first time he has performed any of these works in a recital.
Recitals are not required of professors, but they are expected and valuable McClelland notes.
“It keeps me energized,” he said. “I think it’s important for my students to see me practice what I preach. Recitals help graduates who are learning the art of composition.”
The Knoxville Museum of Art is located at 1050 World’s Fair Park. Admission to the museum is $4 for adults and $2 for children under 18. Admission is half price with a student ID.
