The InterVarsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF) is an interdenominational organization led by and for UT students.
Its activities include worship, Bible studies, conferences, prayer meetings and social activities. Members also participate in outreach ministries with community service and summer mission projects.
IVCF consists of three autonomous chapters which gather for some joint activities. The groups include Tennessee Christian Fellowship, Collegiate Black Christian Fellowship and the Graduate Christian Fellowship.
Mike Maxey, campus minister for TCF and GCF said that TCF is seeking freshmen and students new to the campus.
TCF’s outreach is mostly done through scripture lessons and fellowships. Maxey said small group meetings are what usually attracts students to participate.
GCF, which is still developing, is primarily a Bible study group for graduate students.
Joe Ella Darby, a campus intern for the CBC, said the group was founded by TCF members six years ago.
Joshua Settles is the CBC’s campus minister. CBC was started because TCF members found that very few black and minority persons were coming to the meetings.
Darby explained that CBC did not begin as a result of racism or segregated viewpoints, but rather as a way to be more inclusive of African American traditions and styles of worship and fellowship.
TCF and CBC both meet at the Presidential Grill every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m and Monday at 7 p.m., respectively. For more information about any of the groups, contact Mike Maxey (865) 386-7200 or by e-mail at [email protected].
The meeting times and places of the GCF are still to be announced. For more information about the IVFC, visit their Web site at www.ivcf.org.
