After a successful start to the SEC season with two weekends on the road, the Lady Vol soccer team will try to continue its unblemished streak by defending its home turf this weekend.
Tennessee (7-2-2, 4-0 SEC) takes on Arkansas at 7 p.m. today. LSU will also be in Knoxville, awaiting the Lady Vols in a 1 p.m. Sunday contest.
The Lady Razorbacks (6-5-1, 2-1-1) come into Knoxville off a 3-0 blanking at the hands of Ole Miss last Sunday. Goalkeeper Carrie Dillsaver gave up three first-half goals in that contest but emerged with eight saves overall.
Arkansas is anchored by four-year starter Jenni Brashear, who moved back to her natural forward position after spending the last two seasons at defender.
Lady ‘Backs coach Gordon Henderson believes his team made positive strides despite the loss to the Rebels.
“I have a tremendous amount of respect for the way that we came out in the second half,” Henderson said. “We could have very easily folded and lost, 8-0…the biggest thing was coming away from the road trip with a split.”
The Lady Vols hope to go into the Sunday game against LSU in position to come away from their SEC home debut with a sweep.
The Lady Tigers (6-5-1, 1-2-1) picked up their first conference win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Ole Miss.
Freshman goalkeeper Valerie Vogler tended the nets in that contest. Her performance earned her this week’s SEC Defensive Player of the Week.
Vogler leads the SEC in shutouts, saves and goals-against average.
LSU co-head coach Danielle Fotopoulos said he sees signs that her team is getting into the right rhythm.
“Our team is going in the right direction after our second week of SEC play,” Fotopoulos said. “Having one of our players selected as the player of the week speaks well for our team.”
