While saving money and time are key to dietary survival in college, there
are still ways to find great food without tapping into your savings. Kyoto
Express, one of the Strip’s latest additions to its eclectic array of
eateries, responds to this need, proving that living on a student’s budget
does not mean compromising sophisticated taste.
Kyoto Express, the offshoot of the outrageously popular Kyoto, a Japanese
Hibachi and Sushi restaurant on Kingston Pike, is conveniently located
between O’Charley’s and Charlie Peppers.
The store, which opened on Aug. 5, maintains the unique flavor and style of
the Kyoto’s restaurant and offers an opportunity to sample some of
Knoxville’s finest eating for an unbelievably low price.
“The one thing we had in mind was to keep prices cheap,” said manager Kham
Phommahaxay.
Though the food is prepared fast, to call it “fast food” would be an
injustice. The scents are enough to draw you in, and one taste will send
your chopsticks searching for more. It is the simple answer to those of you
who seek great food at a great price.
Entrees range from Teriyaki chicken priced at $2.99 to Hibachi Steak &
Shrimp for $6.25. The portions are huge and will leave your taste buds
satisfied for days.
“Right now we have a very simple menu so everyone can try a little
something and we can see how it goes,” said Phommahaxay.
The short menu also includes a sampling of sushi, a delicacy that is long
overdue around campus. They offer a small variety of rolls, including a
California Roll (six pieces) for $1.50. Kyoto Express fills a major void on
the Strip, responding to the cravings of sophisticated eaters and
sushi-lovers alike.
“It is quick, easy and cheap, but the important thing is the good food,”
said Phommahaxay.
Kyoto Express offers eat-in and take-out service, and though they do not
currently deliver, it may certainly be worked into future plans. The
atmosphere is clean and bright, creating the perfect lunch or dinner
experience.
College students can take a break from campus life and college-style food
and treat themselves to a delicious meal by simply walking down the Strip.
You almost want to pat yourself on the back for finding such great food, so
fast at such a low price.
In a time when last night’s pizza gets eaten for breakfast, it is
refreshing to know that Kyoto Express exists. And of course, starting off
the semester with chopsticks in hand and sushi in mouth is always a good
sign.
