Sweeten your bitter schedule and salt away some time for a taste of Latin
American culture.
The spring semester offers a cultural sampling of Latin America sponsored
by the International House. Each month presents activities, films and
lectures associated with a particular region of Latin America.
January features northern South America, while February features southern
South America. Central America is the topic for March, and April’s topic is
Brazil.
Political history, current events and the way of life in Latin America are
some of the topics featured in the films and lectures presented throughout
the semester.
The scheduled events expose students to different cultures through
informative and entertaining programs.
Guitarist David Burgess will perform Latin American music Jan. 21 in the UT
Music Hall. Maria Elena, a Venezuelan artist who resides in New York, is
scheduled to present a slide lecture in early February.
A theater troupe from Mexico, Compania de Teatro–Angeles Sanchez, will
perform at the Carousel Theatre on March 30. April offers an opportunity to
learn about spiritist healing in Brazil followed by a Latin dance party
towards the end of the month.
Additional festivities include food tasting once a month for a minimal
charge. The fine cuisines from South America provide the chance to discover
a true taste of Latin American culture.
“Whether you are hungry for a taste of Brazilian food or Latin American
knowledge, the International House events are a great way to satisfy you,”
said sophomore Katie Steinhoff.
“The International House is a neat place to visit and meet people in
addition to learning about other cultures,” said Steinhoff.
The events are open to all students and are free of charge unless otherwise
indicated.
