Zombies will be taking over Pedestrian Walkway tonight at 6 p.m., for a good cause.

The Clinic Vols are holding their annual "Clinic Vols Friday Night 5K" event to raise money for the Red Cross. The 5K is open to any and all people interested. Registration for students, which includes a T-shirt, is only $18.

This is the third appearance of the "Clinic Vols Friday Night 5K" on campus.

"The past two years have not had a theme, so we decided to switch it up a little this year," said Caitlin Miller, the organizer of this year's event.

This year's changes are intended to create a larger participation on campus. The addition of zombies as a theme is expected to generate more involvement among the student population. The rise in the appreciation of zombies with TV shows such as "The Walking Dead" and other popular shows has helped this to become more than a cult classic type of interest.

"Just come dressed as your best zombie to celebrate the Halloween season," Miller said, welcoming participants of all experience levels and ages to the event.

Students are excited about the chance to dress up, especially with the upcoming holiday.

"Anything that helps to get me in the Halloween spirit while benefiting a worthy cause is worth my time," said Katrina Roberts, undecided freshman.

The Clinic Vols are a student organization that helps to staff clinics for over ten elementary schools in the area. Miller told the story of how this event came to be at UT.

"The Friday Night 5K started as a way to fund our clinics in 2010," Miller said.

The event is intended to draw the Knoxville and UT communities closer while also helping out a cause. The Clinic Vols staff members undergo training at the Red Cross, involving a three to four hour session that includes the basic first aid that may become necessary at the many clinics they serve.

According to the Clinic Vols website, the mission of the organization aims "to let Knoxville know we really care about our community and want to promote public health."

Getting students involved in the community is one of the main ways they accomplish their goal. Each Clinic Vol must dedicate at least one hour per week to working at one of the numerous elementary school clinics.

Information about becoming a Clinic Vol can be found by visiting the organization's website at clinicvols.org.

All participants should either register online at zombierun2012.edgereg.com or at the on-site registration table, which opens at 4:30 p.m.
